BPBD Reminds Landslide Potential in South Jakarta and East Jakarta

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), warned of the potential for landslides to occur in East Jakarta and South Jakarta in May 2023. Hence, residents are urged to remain vigilant in anticipating potential ground movements, especially when rainfall is above normal.

Forecasts for areas with potential for ground movement are prepared

Jakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji expressed his party had uploaded a forecast map of the Jakarta Province affected by the landslides on the official website of the Instagram account @bpbddkijakarta.

"In the photo of the map of Jakarta Province, it is dominated by green, which means the potential for ground motion is low; the yellow color has the potential for medium ground motion, and the purple color means high ground motion, but this is not visible in the photo," he expressed, Friday (5/5).

BPBD: No More Inundation in Jakarta Since Late Afternoon

He explained the prediction of landslides in Jakarta had been compiled using two methods, namely the overlay result between  ground movement vulnerability zone map and monthly rainfall forecast map issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

"Forecasts for areas with potential for ground movement are prepared based on the results of overlays between the map of the vulnerability zones for ground movement and the forecast map for monthly rainfall obtained from BMKG," he explained.

Based on information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), there are 10 areas in Jakarta Province, which are in the middle zone which includes South Jakarta and East Jakarta.

For South Jakarta, it covers sub-districts of Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Kebayoran Lama, Mampang Prapatan, Pancoran, Pasar Minggu, and Pesanggrahan. Meanwhile, East Jakarta includes Kramat Jati and Pasar Rebo areas.

He added in the intermediate zone, ground movement can occur if rainfall is above normal, especially areas bordering river valleys, escarpments or ravines, road cliffs or if slopes are disturbed. While in the high zone, old soil movements can be active again.

"Thereby, the urban village, sub-district heads and the community are urged to keep anticipating the potential for ground movement when rainfall is above normal," he stated.
